How to make money online – all you need is a computer, internet connection, and willingness to learn. I’m going to tell you how you can do it.
In this article, I’m going to highlight 10 websites, where you can start making some cash on the side to build up multiple sources of revenue and take some of the pressure off your 9 to 5 job as your sole source of revenue.
In my previous article – 10 Ways to Monetize Content and How People go Wrong! I explore various ways I monetized my website in the past. This article goes into a much broader scope of how you can make money online.
On some of these websites, you can make $100 USD per day or more. The biggest obstacle is breaking into that money-making space, but it is possible with so many success stories.
The greatest advantage is that you don’t have to quit your 9 to 5 to participate, you can work on these projects in your free time.
How To Make Money Online
There are two primary ways to make money online:
Active Income
Active income works like a traditional 9 to 5 job. You get paid for the time you put in and the tasks you complete. The ultimate goal is to increase your hourly rate or task fulfillment as much as possible so that you get the most money for the least amount of time.
Passive Income
Passive income is the holy grail of making money online. The idea is that you set up an operation and it works on automatic, generating income 24/7.
10 Ways to Make Money Online
1. Upwork.com – Active Income
Anyone can sign up to Upwork and offer their online skills. There is an approval process and each day Upwork gets up to 10,000 applications, so don’t be too down if you don’t get accepted.
Essentially Upwork is a marketplace for people who need online jobs done to find freelancers to do the jobs.
These skills cover a wide area and include tasks for content creation, SEO, digital design, app development, video editing, coding, and much much more.
If you feel like you have an online skill that may be suitable, sign up for them today and position yourself on the Upwork market.
2. YouTube – Passive Income
If you’re planning on starting a YouTube channel from scratch note the following:
You will need 4,000 watch hours and 1,000 subscribers within the past 12 months before you can make money from YouTube ads.
How much money can you make on YouTube?
There is no direct answer to that. The range of revenue varies greatly and earning money from ads is just the beginning and perhaps has the lowest potential to make you money.
If you can keep on creating quality content that people want to watch, there really is no limit on where you take it from a business point of view.
You can also make money through YouTube through paid sponsorships. You will need a large audience for this. Usually, a minimum of 10,000 subscribers would be needed for this to be an effective strategy for you.
You can also make money through affiliate marketing which we’ll get to a bit later on in the list.
3. Amazon – Active Income
While Jeff Bezos did start off the company selling books Amazon now sells just about anything you can think off. A true A to Z of online shopping.
Amazon is not just for shopping. Here are three ways you can make money with Amazon:
3. (a) – Amazon Mechanical Turk – This is similar to Upwork.com – it’s a place where businesses outsource work that is too difficult for a computer program to do.
These tasks include anything from audio editing, transcribing, translating audio and video from different languages, testing web pages, writing reviews and many other services.
You can make $20 to $30 USD per hour by working on various tasks.
3. (b) – Amazon Kindle Publishing – turn your ideas into an ebook and start making money.
Of course to start you need to produce an ebook to sell. You can write this ebook yourself or you can hire someone to write it for you.
Note, you don’t need to be an established author or find a publishing company to do this.
All can be done from the comfort of your own home and start earning some passive income.
Amazon takes care of all the money handling so you can sit back and watch the $$$’s roll in.
Some people make over $100,000 USD per year publishing Kindle ebooks on Amazon.
3. (c) – Amazon’s Associates Program – This is an affiliate link system set up by amazon. Get the amazon generated links or widgets for products on Amazon and when people sign up through those links you will earn a commission.
This commission will be up to a maximum of 10% of the sale.
4. ClickBank – Passive
ClickBank is a place for product developers and affiliates for selling their courses or services to the world. Only digital products are sold on ClickBank. The beauty of Clickbank is that the commission payout is so much higher than Amazon.
Some affiliates pay you as much as 75% of the sales.
Head over to ClickBank, find something to sell and start making money.
5. Flippa.com – Active/Passive
Flippa is the number one market place for buying and selling online businesses.
Potentially you could buy an online business that is already making money.
It’s an auction site, pretty much like eBay, accept here you would be buying assets such as websites, apps, domains, Shopify stores and Amazon FBA accounts.
6. Shutterstock – Passive
Shutterstock is a platform where you can buy or sell digital media, such as pictures, music and video clips, mainly created by freelancers and third parties.
If you have a talent for creating media, you can monetize your talent on Shutterstock. Every time someone purchases your pictures you get paid a commission.
7. Rover – Active
Rover.com is a dog sitting service (Currently only available in the United States and Canada).
If you live in either of those two countries you can register as a dog sitter and get paid for taking care of dogs. There may be similar websites that serve your country so it is worth checking out.
8. TakeLessons – Active
TakeLessons is a website whereby you can teach any skill you may have that would benefit the members of this community.
This could be learning a language, playing an instrument, or giving math tutorials. Anything you can teach that you think someone else might not know, you can teach lessons and start making money online.
9. Fiverr
Fiverr is becoming more and more a household name. It started off from very humble beginnings and has now become a place of major business. The idea was that people sell services and products for $5 USD.
As the community of Fiverr sellers became more sophisticated this evolved into a hook for sellers for them up-sell their products and services.
Fiverr is a freelance website where you can outsource pretty much anything you can do online.
From a buyers perspective this is excellent as it is generally easy enough to find top talent for really low prices.
From a sellers point of view if you understand the art of up-selling you can do really well here.
The scope of skills available is so fast, anything from photoshop work to vegan t-shirt sales and architectural drafting.
If there is any digital skill that can be outsourced you can most likely find it on Fiverr.
10 .Dropshipping
With dropshipping what you are doing is selling someone else’s stuff with a profit without having to deal with the shipping. Essentially you are dropping the shipping out of the equation.
You are acting as a broker in the deal. You can do this by opening up a Shopify store and then linking it with Oberlo
Oberlo is an app that integrates with Shopify it’s what a lot of people use as a way to source for stuff they would like to sell online.
The concept of dropshipping is as follows:

10. (b) Once they buy something from you, you pay the manufacturer to ship the item
This is all done without you ever seeing or touching the product.
This is complicated to start, but people can become very wealthy from Dropshipping.
11. Bonus for How To Make Money Online – Affiliate Subscriptions
Perhaps the best way to make money online I have seen is through affiliate referral fees to progressive subscription courses.
This means when you refer someone to subscribe, you don’t just get a one-off sale, but you get recurring revenue for as long as the person is a paying subscriber.
