What is Ikigai? – Discover Ikigai – A Japenese Secret
Ikigai means “reason for being”. It’s a formula to help you understand your life’s purpose so that you can live a more fulfilling life.
Does that sound good?
Before you read the rest of this article you should learn how to pronounce Ikigai so say it with me (eee-key-guy) – It helps if you smile while you say it.
Ikigai originated in Japan, it came of Okinawa.
Fun fact, this is the same place karate originated from. Any Karate Kid fans out there???
In a TED talk by Tim Tamashiro, which you can see here, Tim explains that Ikigai comes from two words:
- Iki- life
- gai – worth
So, put them together and you’ve got life’s worth or in other word’s life’s purpose.
I came across Ikigai completely serendipitously (I got lucky). What I was searching for was Pinterest strategies and I came across this YouTube video by Mike Vestil.
This video was about “How To Make Money On Pinterest in 2021 (For Beginners)”.
Discover Ikigai
As soon as Mike mentioned Ikigai I knew I found something special.
There is a nice article by Chris Myers on Forbes, that you can read here: How To Find Your Ikigai And Transform Your Outlook On Life And Business
Ikigai aims to pinpoint the combination of the following:
- Things you love
- What you’re good at
- What the world needs
- Something you can get paid for
Taking all of the above into account, I went ahead and answered these questions:
What I’m good at?
- Presenting
- Organising
- Leading
- Creating plans
- Writing
What can I be paid for?
- Life coaching
- Team building
- Business coaching
- Teaching/lecturing
What the world needs?
- Coaches
- Teachers
- Leadership roles
What I love?
- Public speaking
- Inspiring others through my words and actions
- Encouraging people to see things differently
- Starting things
Taking all of the above into consideration my Ikigai is to be a business coach or perhaps a life coach.
Honestly, if I was on the stage giving inspiring talks, selling books, and coaching people to live the life of their dreams I’d be an extremely happy man.
I’d wake up every morning with a purpose. I don’t think I’d sleep. My life would be a massive universal orgasm.
My Ikigai Journey
To aid me on my journey I have created this website (www.scottdrenwick.com). The purpose of this website is to lead people to live more inspired and better lives.
One of the ways I do that is by teaching them about digital marketing so that they can enable any type of online business they want. If that sounds like you then sign up for the free videos series all about digital marketing – Sign up here.
If you’re reading this article, you’re part of this journey and I’m so happy and grateful for that, so thank you very much.
Ikigai – A Formula for Happiness
Ikigai states that in order for you to be happy you need to spend your time doing something you are happy to do.
This logic may seem a bit too simple, but apparently people seem hell bent on not doing things that are happy to do. Perhaps this is a message we need to hear more often.
Ikigai suggests that without aligning the four components of the diagram that you will never be truly happy. Hitting the Ikigai in the center is of great importance.
You’ll find a detailed breakdown of how to look at the Ikigai chart here in this YouTube video:
This is a guide to help you find out wonderful things about yourself and the world in return will say thank you for it.
My Ikigai is to inspire others to a better way of being.
What’s yours?
I’ll leave you with this:
